Cyrus' grandfather established himself as a respected Persian rug merchant in the central Iranian city of Isfahan, an important center of hand-woven rug production, in early twentieth century. The whole family has been in the Persian and Oriental rug business ever since. Other members of the family own Persian and Oriental rug galleries in New York, California, Texas, and other states across the US.

Mr. Atighehchi, an alumnus of American University's Kogod School of Business, has been active in the Persian and Oriental rug business from the age of 14. He has been a resident of the Washington DC area since 1978, and founded the Cyrus Rug Gallery in 1979. For twenty years, he worked hard to accumulate one of the finest Persian and Oriental rug galleries in the Eastern Seaboard. Eventually the business outgrew the original location. In 1999, Cyrus Rug Gallery moved to its current home in Vienna, Virginia.
